What the F Happened to Chelsea Grimm?
Arguably the most bizarre missing person case

So, if you haven’t heard this wacky story, strap in! Of course the most likely reason this is a story at all is not pleasant or funny, but we’ll get to that.
Chelsea Grimm was a clinical social worker living in San Diego, CA up until two and a half years ago. She grew up in Connecticut, and her family was still there when she moved across the country after college.
Then, at 32 years old, she decided she would take some time off to attend a wedding back in her home state. She was very excited to see old friends and family, reconnecting while celebrating a loved one’s lifelong happiness.
The first of many setbacks, however, struck right out of the gate. She had a pet lizard — bearded dragon, to be specific — named either Roz or Roxy. I don’t know why this is unclear, as you think she at least would be very particular about the name.
But hey, maybe Roz was the nickname for Roxy. And I know that Roxy is already a nickname for Roxanne, but let’s not get into that! This isn’t even remotely the weirdest detail.

So we’ll call the reptile Roz. If you must know a reason, it’s so the pet’s name doesn’t rhyme with the owner’s, ok?
Unfortunately, not a single airline would allow Chelsea to bring Roz onboard. I must say I’m actually surprised by the universal “no reptile” policy. Not even on Southwest? Or… we’re all thinking it… Spirit?! I thought anything goes there. Except anything decent into your hands. Boom!
Anyway, in real life I guess there wouldn’t be motherf-ing snakes on the motherf-ing plane. So Chelsea decided to drive cross-country. A pet probably never changed a person’s fate so much since Lassie.

She only made it as far as Arizona, however. She had called her parents somewhere near the border and told them she realized she wouldn’t make it to Connecticut in time. So she was going to “skip the wedding and camp here for a while.”
Her ulterior reason for the road trip became her only reason: to publish a photo essay of the “forgotten people of America.” A noble goal, but an ill-fated one.
In the days leading up to her last sighting, she went to two different motels asking if she could book a room with Euros. That’s right, a 32 year old woman who grew up in Connecticut and only otherwise lived three years in California… tried to pay for a room in Arizona with Euros!
Lest you think this was an off-the-cuff angle just to see if she could manage it (like I did)… well no. She’s on Ring camera footage asking first one employee, a young man, and she says outright she’s trying to “stay off the grid.”
Then his supervisor, a kindly woman in her 40’s, comes out to discuss it with her. She mentions another place that will accept cash and advises her that that means American dollars.
The woman adds at the doorway as Chelsea’s leaving that there’s somewhere nearby where they exchange Mexican pesos, so it might be worth a shot to see if they’ll exchange her currency too.
Clearly that didn’t work out, because instead her car was seen abandoned on a remote road in the Kaibab National Forest at least 10 different times leading up to the fateful day of September 30th, 2023.

So you might notice that it says two of the tires were shredded. As strange as that is, it wasn’t the case the first few times the vehicle was seen in the same spot in the middle of this road. One witness in fact saw her nearby the Ford Escape taking selfies, like she had just stopped there for the view.
She refused help from anyone who stopped and asked her. With one ranger, after the tires became unusable, she was just sitting in the driver’s seat and told him and his buddy that they missed a beautiful sunset. So absolutely no indication of being in distress. The guy did describe her as “California weird” however.
The last person to interact with her (that we know of) is a female officer, who offered her a ride back, food, and drink, but she kept refusing. The only thing she did want was the number for the Cash for Clunkers program.
So, upper levels of strange. It was sometime after all that that she seemed to voluntarily leave with the lizard, a jug of water, and a couple of other personal items. So she was on foot with her reptile companion when she disappeared.
I think it’s obvious that mental health was a huge factor here. So who knows if she would have made it through had someone not listened to her requests and insisted she take a ride. It’s as tragic as it is amusing.
Amusing from the outside, that is. Not for a tortured family left without closure, and all those friends who thought they might see her at the wedding. Just when you think there’s no more mystery in this surveillanced, hyper-tech world… a story like this comes along to prove us wrong.
And one question that might echo through the generations, unable to be answered: What the F happened to Chelsea Grimm??
