The Olden Days

Remember?

By Earl W. PearlPublished about 13 hours ago 1 min read

We used to say, “I disagree”

And still we would be friends

Try that today, I guarantee

That friendship likely ends

There was a time if people fought

There’s maybe a black eye

You fight today, you’re getting shot

Cos someone has to die

Remember drive-ins, Friday night

With three shows, maybe four

Those matinee’s were my delight

I wish they’d build some more

We used to dance a certain way

Called Elvis, “Way too wild”

You dance the way they do today

It could produce a child

Remember when we went to church

Today they call it odd

So we removed God from His perch

The cellphone’s now our god

We used to hear our anthem played

Upon our heart, our hand

That anthem now has been betrayed

Now some won’t even stand

The thing I wish we could restore

It’s something we neglect

That “something” missing anymore

Is what we called, respect

That simpler time was just a phase

A phase that said, “Goodbye”

Those days are called, “The Olden Days”

Now here’s my heavy sigh
