8th Straight Time Definitely Needs to be the Charm for Hurricanes
The Carolina Hurricanes and their closing window return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the eighth straight season

It's been a minute since we had another Stanley Cup Playoff clinch this season. March 20 saw the Colorado Avalanche as the very first team to get in, and two days later, the Dallas Stars joined the party. Nothing much since then, but here it is, the second day of April, and four teams entered this day with a chance to get in. Three of the teams were in the Eastern Conference, and one of them was the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes had been leading the Metropolitan Division for a good bit, and to get in, a win was all they needed.
Against the Columbus Blue Jackets, Logan Stankoven continued to pay dividends since being traded from Dallas, as he had two goals in the first eight minutes of the game. That was enough. A three goal first period turned into a 5-1 victory over Columbus. With the victory, the Hurricanes became playoff bound, mainly because the win also guaranteed Carolina a spot in the Metropolitan Division's Top 3.
This is Carolina's eighth straight playoff appearance, which is now their longest playoff streak in their overall franchise history. Their previous high of seven straight years was achieved between 1986 and 1992, when the team was in Hartford as the Whalers. That streak amounted to very little; the Whalers upset the Quebec Nordiques in the Adams Division Semifinals in 1986, but beginning with their defeat in the Adams Final against the Montréal Canadiens, the Whalers would lose seven straight playoff series. As I've said before: a playoff streak is good, but only if it really amounts to something. Let's look at this current streak, shall we?
It all started in 2019, and that appearance ended a decade-long drought. That year, they reached the Final Four. Eastern Conference Final. Swept by Boston. Even so, definitely not bad. 2020, the Toronto bubble, lost to Boston again, this time in the first round. 2021, the second COVID-shortened season. Finished first in the localized Central Division, but ousted in the Central Final by the Tampa Bay Lightning. 2022, eliminated in a home Game Seven in the Metro Final by the New York Rangers. 2023, their best chance with top teams eliminated. Reached the East Final, but the upstart Florida Panthers swept them. 2024, ousted by the Rangers in Round 2 again. Last year, back in the Final Four again, another great chance to go far, but they lost to Florida again. At least they won a ECF game this time.
So yeah, their last seven years? Three Conference Final appearances, but only one game won. Yeah, Year Eight really needs to be much, much better.

The Hurricanes have the usual suspects leading the way. Sebastian Aho continues to be their top player, leading the way with 77 points (25G/52A in 75 games. Seth Jarvis is their top goal scorer with 30, and has 63 points overall. Andrei Svechnikov's 65 points are second on the team, and part of the group now includes Nikolaj Ehlers. In his first year with the Hurricanes, Ehlers has 64 points (24G/40A). Shayne Gostisbehere leads Carolina defensemen with 47 points (13G/34A), and I have to mention Logan Stankoven, who has 36 points (17G/19A) in his first full season with the Canes.
As I said before, this is Year Eight of the Hurricanes' current streak, but it needs to be a big year for them. So far, it's been nothing but blown opportunities, plagued by their terrible 1-12 Eastern Conference Final record (combining their appearances in 2019, 2023, and 2025). Even worse, if you count 2009, it's 1-16 since their Cup win in 2006. I've said for the last two years that Carolina's Cup window is quite narrow, if not closed. The opportunity is there, like it always is when one makes the Stanley Cup Playoffs. They will most likely finish first in the Metro, but they did that in 2022 and 2023 and didn't even make the Final. They absolutely need this year to go very well, because if the Final Four continues to be a dead end, or worse--they don't get that far, they might have to change certain personnel. By that, I mean head coach Rod Brind'Amour. We'll see how this year goes for the Hurricanes, it'll be an interesting campaign.
