Movie Review: 'The Retaliators'
The Retaliators stars Michael Lombardi as Bishop, a widowed pastor in a small town. His life is rather perfect, raising two beautiful daughters, teenager Sarah (Katie Kelly) and pre-teen, Rebecca (Abbey Hafer), and overseeing a thriving parish. Familial tension arises mostly through restrictions like curfews and time spent looking at phones. There is also a small matter of Sarah thinking her dad isn’t strong as we watch him allow a bully to take the Christmas tree he and his daughter’s had just chosen from a tree lot. Bishop sees this as a teachable moment about turning the other cheek. Sarah sees it as weakness.

Documentary Review: 'The Velvet Underground' from Director Todd Haynes
The Velvet Underground was unlike any other band in rock history. Presented like an art show, under the guidance of legendary pop art provocateur Andy Warhol, the band was living art in New York City in the late 1960s. The Velvet Underground with cantankerous and charismatic lead singer Lou Reed, sonic scientist John Cale on piano and viola, glass ceiling busting drummer Moe Tucker, and guitarist Sterling Morrison, were the combustible elements of a genre busting, new kind of rock stardom.

Movie Review: 'Bergman Island' Starring Vicky Krieps
Bergman Island stars Vicky Krieps and Tim Roth as a couple of married filmmakers who travel to Sweden, and to Faro Island, the spiritual and actual home of the legendary filmmaker, Ingmar Bergman. Bergman filmed his most celebrated films on Faro Island, including Scenes from A Marriage. In fact, our main characters, Chris and Tony, are ominously staying in the very home in which the famed movie that launched a thousand divorces was shot.

Movie Review: 'Hard Luck Love Song'
Singer Albert King once sang “If it wasn’t for Bad Luck, I would not have no luck at all” in his legendary song Born Under a Bad Sign (1968). That poetic and poignant lament perfectly suits the protagonist of the drama, Hard Luck Love Song. Jesse, played by Michael Dorman, has more than his share of bad luck but much of it is his own fault. Working as a pool hustler in Nashville, Tennessee is not the safest or smartest activity. Hustling pool tends to leave a bad taste in the mouth of those who are subject to the hustle and thus Jesse often finds himself in a bad way.

Classic Movie Review: God Told Me To
God Told Me To is a 1976 horror-thriller from legendary B-movie director Larry Cohen and it’s a movie that deserves a chance for a remake. Inside of God Told Me To there is a very good religious based horror movie dying to get out. Sadly, Larry Cohen only found the seeds of that great horror movie and never fully cultivated those seeds into a satisfying final product. What we get instead is a half of an excellent movie and half of a bizarre, outlandish and outright terrible movie.

Movie Review: 'The Night House' Starring Rebecca Hall
The Night House stars Rebecca Hall as Beth, a recently widowed teacher dealing with the aftermath of her husband, Owen’s, suicide. Deeply disillusioned and jaded by her husband’s decision to kill himself, Beth struggles to not be the subject of anyone’s pity. Beth would like little more than to get back to her life and go back to work and put the past behind her but something in her home continues to draw her back toward grief.

Movie Review: 'No Time To Die' Starring Daniel Craig
No Time to Die is the best James Bond movie of the Daniel Craig era. That’s not particularly high praise coming from me as I have not enjoyed a James Bond movie since the Roger Moore era and that was mostly a so bad it’s good appreciation of A View to a Kill. For me, James Bond went out of fashion when the Cold War ended. Since then, better and more dynamic spy characters, such as Matt Damon’s super-spy Jason Bourne came along and revamped the spy genre.

Movie Review: 'Detention'
Detention is a Taiwanese horror movie that uses the tools of the genre to tell a story of Taiwanese history and the vile threat of authoritarian dictatorship. Directed by John Hsu, Detention is based on a video game, of the same title, from Red Candle Games that was released in 2017. Both the game and the movie make use of the aesthetics of horror to tell a deeper and richer story in a clever package.

Movie Review: 'South of Heaven' Starring Jason Sudeikis. Top Story - October 2021.
Annie (Evangeline Lilly) is dying. Annie has lung cancer and has been given between 9 and 12 months before her life ends. The diagnosis is recent enough that she got it just before her long term fiancé, 12 years to be precise, Jimmy Ray (Jason Sudeikis) was to go in front of a parole board. Jimmy has spent almost the entirety of their engagement behind bars. It might seem convenient when he tells of Annie’s prognosis in front of the parole board but what you come to find out about Jimmy Ray is that bad luck and timing are a big part of his life.

My Favorite Movies from the 52nd Annual Nashville Film Festival
The Nashville Film Festival was held from September 30th to October 6th of 2021 and I was lucky enough to attend the festival, virtually. I would have loved to be there in person but my capacity as a full time radio host and my duties with the Critics Choice Documentary Awards and my gig reviewing general release movies, meant that there was no getting away from home and only the chance to see several select movies from the Nashville Film Festival. For this article I settled on three movies that I loved the most from my time virtually attending the Nashville Film Festival.

Movie Review: 'Venom Let There Be Carnage' Starring Tom Hardy
Venom Let There Be Carnage is a very quirky comic book action movie. Directed by Andy Serkis, the man who gave physical life to Gollum in Lord of the Rings, Venom Let There Be Carnage appears far more interested in the relationship between between Venom, the alien symbiote being that eats human heads, and Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy), the reporter turned body host for Venom. But the question is: What does Andy Serkis have to say about the relationship between Venom and Eddie Brock?

Movie Review: 'The Guilty' Starring Jake Gyllenhaal
The Guilty is an American remake of a 2018 Danish thriller that was based very loosely on real events. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the American version of The Guilty is one of the fastest paced and most exciting movies of 2021. This can be attributed to Fuqua, a talented action director whose style translates shockingly well to a drama about one man and a phone bank. Of course, The Guilty would not work as well as it does without star Jake Gyllenhaal, an actor with more than enough presence and charisma to carry a movie all by himself.
